How to Plant Fill the planting area or pot with loose, well-draining soil. Dig a wide hole and place the tuber horizontally, keeping the short old stem or crown facing upward. Cover the crown with around 2–3 inches of soil without pressing it firmly. Install a strong stake beside the tuber before the stems begin growing. Water lightly after planting. Keep the soil only slightly moist until shoots appear, then begin regular watering. Plant Care Once active growth begins, water deeply whenever the upper inch of soil starts drying.
