A WORK FROM A COMPLETED LEGACY Li Ying 李英 was a National Senior Technician, Fujian Provincial Ceramic Art Master and Nanping Arts and Crafts Master. Her Oil Drop Tea Bowl entered the collection of the National Museum of China. Li Ying has since passed away. There will be no new works made by her hand. What remains is the body of Jian Zhan she created during her lifetime. For collectors, this gives every surviving work a different context: the artist’s body of work is now complete. HER GOLD｜李英的金 Li Ying’s gold glaze has a distinctive character. Bright. Clean. Luminous. Yet never overly decorative. Under softer light, the gold appears warm and restrained. Under stronger light, the surface becomes noticeably more metallic and vivid. The attraction is not simply that it is gold. It is the quality of the gold. BLACK-RIM GOLD｜黑金 LY047 represents another expression of Li Ying’s gold. A clearly defined black-glazed rim remains around the mouth of the bowl before transitioning into the gold-toned glaze below. That black rim changes the entire composition. It gives the gold a darker frame, stronger contrast and greater visual depth. Rather than appearing uniformly bright, the surface moves between black, bronze and gold as the angle of light changes. The black gives the gold somewhere to shine. JIN BO｜金钵 At approximately 87 × 63 mm, LY047 has a fuller and more substantial presence than Li Ying’s smaller bowls. The rounded Jin Bo form gives the piece the character of a compact golden bowl — broad, deep and visually grounded. This stronger volume works particularly well with the black-and-gold glaze. The form gives it weight. The glaze gives it light. WHY THIS PIECE MATTERS If LY041 represents an accessible small work by Li Ying, LY047 offers something different. It has more physical presence.
