Art Nouveau is an ornamental style of art that flourished between about 1890 and 1910 throughout Europe and the United States. Art Nouveau is characterized by its use of a long, sinuous, organic line and was employed most often in architecture, interior design, jewelry, and glass design. It was a deliberate attempt to create a new style, free of the heavier, more somber feel that dominated much of 19th-century art and design. During this time, artists turned to nature and fantasy for subject matter, with fairies and goddesses taking prominence. Large, asymmetric pearls ('baroque') have historically been utilized in fantasy jewelry, with the artisan creating a piece of jewelry centered around the shape of the pearl and what it reminds them of. In this case, the jeweler found the pearl reminiscent of a rosebud. Crafted in 18 karat yellow gold and sterling silver, the fabulous baroque pearl bud has elegant, expertly crafted leaves and a stem with thirty-two rose cut diamond accents. A beautiful early Art Nouveau piece that would make a fantastic boutonniere for both ladies and gentlemen alike!
