Persian wootz priming flask

Part of the warriors attire in the era of blackpowder firearms is the priming flask and powder horn, both of high importance during battle. Shapes and sizes vary due to geographical influence, climate and the cultural aesthetic fashion. This example likely originates from Iran, probably from the border region with Afghanistan. The body is crafted from high-quality wootz steel, while the steel mounts are decorated with pierced work, a feature characteristic of Afghan arms from this period. The mechanism is designed so that a squeezing motion ensures an adequate amount of powder is delivered into the pan. The terminal of the lever is formed as a stylized bird, and the central section incorporates three separate moving elements, also executed in pierced steel. Priming flasks of this type generally date to the 19th century.
