In the early 20th Century - before Air Mail services were even an option - these tiny miniatures were actually marketed by Royal Doulton for customers and businesses to send to friends, family or business acquaintances as gifts - as they could be shipped easily via Sea Freight in the era. Many of these tiny pieces were marketed as gifts that could be sent in specially packed wooden "crates" that Royal Doulton sold them in as a Christmas or special occassion gift - we have seen literature that even allowed for a message on the box! There is much that modern day marketing could learn from a company such as Royal Doulton - and these pieces were made for some some 100 years ago! A word for the novice collector - not all small Royal Doulton items are to be considered a true "miniature" - strictly speaking a miniature will be in a miniature shape and under 7.5cms (3 inches) tall
