Application: Aromatherapy, Perfumery, Cosmetics, Soapmaking, Candle Crafting Description: It was initially named Eucalyptus phellandra due to its notable concentration of alpha-phellandrene, a cyclic monoterpene characterized by a fresh, minty, and mildly citrusy aroma with subtle peppery undertones. Early research suggests that alpha-phellandrene may possess antifungal, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, potentially inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi. An Australian native tree with over 700 species, Eucalyptus radiata now grows in South Africa too. It is a shrub that can grow up to 2 meters high with long, narrow yellowish green leaves. Eucalyptus radiata likes rich organic soil and well drained slopes. For production of essential oil top 2/3 of the shrub is harvested. Harvesting is every six months during the summer when the days are without rain. Biomass collected from the plantation is shredded and the oil is extracted by steam distillation. Distillation of Eucalyptus radiata leaves and branch yields 2.5-3% of essential oils. Most of the essential oil is in the leaves. Main Constituents and Typical Range: 1,8-Cineole (Eucalyptol): 60% – 80% A monoterpene oxide which provides the oil with that familiar camphor-like, minty aroma, along with that refreshing cooling the sensation. It is the primary bioactive compound contributing to the oil’s decongestant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. α-Pinene: 1% - 5% is a bicyclic monoterpene known for its fresh pine and woody aroma. It is recognized for its potential to support respiratory health by aiding in the dilation of airways and offering anti-inflammatory properties. α-Terpineol: 4% - 14% A oxygenated monoterpene that has a floral scent similar to lilacs. It enhances the antimicrobial properties of the oil, supporting its ability to inhibit germs and bacteria. Limonene: 4% - 15% This monoterpene hydrocarbon adds a fresh, citrusy top note and possesses antioxidant properties. p-Cymene: 1% - 5% A monoterpene hydrocarbon that contributes to the stability of the oil and contributes to the oil's fungicidal activities. Alpha Phellendrene: 1 - 3% A cyclic monoterpene characterized by a fresh, minty, and mildly citrusy aroma with subtle peppery undertones.
