An elegant sax on Hollywood Boulevard On June 22 and 27, 1956, Stan Getz and his quartet performed in a club on Hollywood Boulevard, in the heart of Los Angeles. Two legendary concerts. But what fascinated all these jazzmen in California at that time? Whether black, white, saxophonists, pianists, singers, they all flocked to the clubs. Their names? Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Art Tatum, Chet Baker, Sarah Vaughan. And, of course... Stan Getz. From their new sunny platform, they radiated worldwide. What were they looking for?: A more pleasant climate than the cold of the East Coast, a less tense social environment than in the South, a musical blending fostered by an unprejudiced governor, Republican Goodwin J. Knight, the spectacular growth of the job market, the glamour of the film industry, a more liberated inspiration. Why not simply the charm of the "West Coast" spirit? Their favorite spots: the Tiffany, the Haig. But particularly the mythical Zardi's Jazzland, which hosted Stan and his acolytes during these two evenings, the recordings of which remained unreleased on vinyl in their entirety until this edition. It was in the spring of 2025 that we rediscovered these original tapes in suburban Chicago. The program for these two concerts is very varied, even though the lineup remains the same. On piano, Lou Levy, a sparkling representative of the West Coast style, whose playing perfectly complemented Getz's flourishing inspiration in 1956. Added to this were two talented and inventive musicians, Max Bennett on bass and Gary Frommer on drums. A gentle, tranquil atmosphere, so in harmony with the "cool mood" that Stan so loved. On this June evening, the journey Stan Getz offers us ends with a rhythmic and captivating improvisation that transports listeners to the sky with California's incandescent stars. |STARTGOLD|Stan Getz, saxophone|ENDGOLD| |STARTGOLD|Lou Levy, piano|ENDGOLD| |STARTGOLD|Max Bennett, bass|ENDGOLD| |STARTGOLD|Gary Frommer, drums|ENDGOLD| Ref.: TLR-2504060 Photo: © 1958 Jean-Pierre Leloir Recorded at Zardi's, Los Angeles, USA, on 22&27.VI.1956 MONO ℗ 1956 Private Collection Remastered by ℗ & © 2025 THE LOST RECORDINGS from the original analog tapes
