A complete Winsor & Newton artist's watercolour box, packed with paints, gold skins and artists' tools. Working lock and key. Circa. 1870. The box appears to have belonged to Montague Fowler of Thornwood Lodge Kensington. Montague Fowler was the son of the famous civil engineer Sir John Fowler (1817-1898), who was chief engineer of the world's first underground railway, and played a major role in designing the early underground railways of London. Montague Fowler, became Rev. Montague Fowler and served as chaplain to the Archbishop of Canterbury. He succeeded his father as 4th Baronet, with the baronetcy line becoming extinct upon his death in 1933. The box retains every original paint with legible names, glass bowls and ceramic palettes. There is a considerable volume of extra materials to include period water gold, Gold Beater's Skin, Winsor & Newton gold lustre powder and drawing pins, additional tube paints, brushes tools etc. The paintbox is in a wholly original condition, exactly as its last painter left it. There are loose gold lustre balls roaming the bottom drawer and a spill of green paint powder to the inside top left. A rare survivor.
