The lakes, mountains and rivers of Jongsuk Yoon’s native South Korea are depicted in her semi-abstract compositions, where broad brush strokes of bright colour express her memories and emotional connections to her homeland. My paintings often begin with natural forms – mountains, paths, or clouds – but eventually dissolve into gesture. I learned over the years that abstraction can be deeply personal, that gesture can carry emotion. – Jongsuk Yoon Spring Lake is made using the painterly etching technique of spit bite aquatint. Yoon painted an acidic solution directly onto copper plates covered with a layer of aquatint, thereby etching her brush marks into the metal. Each of the areas of colour were printed from separate plates, combining to form her intuitive compositions of riotous, pure colour that embody her remembered landscapes of childhood.
