HIV AIDS
Over the past four decades, HIV infection has become one of the most rapidly evolving fields of medicine, with major advances in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Once associated with severe immunodeficiency and high mortality, HIV has now become a long-term, manageable chronic condition with the availability of effective antiretroviral therapy. Rapid scientific progress in the field, the emergence of new treatment and prevention options, and the increasing life expectancy of people living with HIV have created a growing need for comprehensive resources that bring current knowledge into clinical practice. As cardiovascular, metabolic, renal, bone, and neurocognitive disorders, malignancies, polypharmacy, and ageing become increasingly important aspects of long-term follow-up, pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis, psychosocial support, peer counselling, and efforts to reduce stigma have also become integral components of HIV care. In preparing this book, our aim was not only to address the diagnosis and antiretroviral treatment of HIV, but also to provide an up-to-date reference that approaches the care of people living with HIV and HIV prevention as a whole. The book covers the key areas of contemporary HIV practice, from epidemiology and diagnosis to resistance testing and antiretroviral therapy; from drug interactions and virological failure to opportunistic infections and coinfections; and from pregnancy to ageing and long-term health issues. By also addressing quality of life, psychosocial support, peer counselling, and the role of community organisations representing people living with HIV, we sought to reflect an approach to HIV care that focuses not only on the disease, but on the individual. We hope that this book will serve as a current and reliable reference for healthcare professionals and researchers from different disciplines working in the field of HIV, particularly specialists and trainees in infectious diseases and clinical microbiology. This book is the result of the collective efforts of many colleagues who work in the field of HIV and have brought together their clinical experience and scientific knowledge. We sincerely thank our section editors and all contributing authors for their valuable work and for generously sharing their knowledge and experience. Progress in the field of HIV requires us to continually update what we know and to reassess our clinical practice in the light of new evidence. We hope that this book will contribute to the daily practice of our colleagues and, ultimately, to improving the quality of care provided to people living with HIV.
