Punica granatum 'Sverkhranniy'

Punica granatum 'Sverkhranniy' is a compact pomegranate whose Russian name means "super early": it is among the earliest pomegranates to ripen its fruit. Orange-red flowers open from July to September on a bushy, deciduous shrub of about 2m, and the young leaves come through bronze before turning glossy green. In a long, hot summer it carries large red fruit with sweet, soft-seeded arils, and it is self-fertile, so one plant is enough. In the UK, pomegranates need autumn temperatures of 13 to 16°C to ripen, so fruit outdoors is unlikely except after a long, hot summer on a warm wall or under glass. The flowers and glossy foliage are the reliable show. Rated H3, it takes about -5°C: give it the warmest south- or west-facing wall, sharp drainage and shelter, or keep it in a large pot that moves under cover in hard frost. Its compact size suits a container among our plants for pots or a hot spot in an exotic border. For the species, see our Punica granatum. What you receive: a plant in a 23cm / 5L pot.
