THE LAST BEAUTIFUL LIE is a literary psychological mystery about identity, memory, family, and the dangerous things people do in the name of love. When Nkem Okorie, a 38-year-old Civil Registry officer in Abuja, loses his mother, he expects grief to be the hardest thing he will have to endure. Instead, he discovers a secret his mother carried for twenty-three years: she lied to him about his father. What begins with an old wooden trunk, a photograph and a handwritten confession soon becomes a disturbing journey through altered birth records, missing people, forgotten archives and identities that have been deliberately rewritten. Nkem discovers that the story of his family has been built upon documents that cannot be trusted and memories that have been carefully controlled. The father he grew up believing in may not have been his biological father. A man officially declared dead may still be alive. People who were once erased from official records continue to exist, carrying names that were never truly theirs. As Nkem follows a trail through abandoned government offices, hidden rooms and long-buried family records, he is forced to confront a painful question: How much of a person’s identity belongs to them, and how much is created by the people who tell their story? At the heart of the novel is Grace Okorie, a mother whose greatest act of love becomes her greatest betrayal.
