Hagon, LG. Sto. H.M.S. Clio. James Hagon was born in Holt, Norfolk on the 15th October 1880. He enlisted on the 6th January 1900 to 24th January 1922. Serving on various ships and shore bases, including, Blenheim, Fishguard, Blake, Majestic, Agamemnon, Tyne, Bacchante, Attentive II, Clio, Hecla, Diligence. HMS Anemone from 8th May 1915 to 14th December 1918. In mid-1915, Anemone was deployed to the Eastern Mediterranean to support Allied naval operations during the Dardanelles and Aegean campaigns. From 15 February 1916, she joined the Smyrna Patrol, tasked with blockading the Ottoman Turkish coastline from Cape Kaba to Latitude 38°30’E (covering Smyrna, modern-day Izmir). Operating out of Port Iere on the island of Mytilene (Lesbos), the vessel participated in operations around Chios in mid-February 1916 and conducted regular minesweeping, reconnaissance, and patrol missions along enemy-held shores. Convoy Escort and Anti-Submarine Warfare (1917–1918) To counter Germany’s unrestricted submarine warfare, Anemone was refitted in 1917 with depth-charge throwers and specialized anti-submarine detection gear. Reassigned from pure minesweeping to convoy escort duties, she spent 1917 and 1918 guarding Allied merchant ships and troop transports across vulnerable Mediterranean transit routes, screening vessels against German and Austro-Hungarian U-boats. Post-Armistice Operations (Late 1918) Following the Armistice of 11 November 1918, Anemone remained on active service in Eastern Mediterranean and Ottoman waters, assisting with mine clearance, securing strategic waterways, and enforcing Allied peace terms. By 14 December 1918, she concluded her primary wartime operational duty, having fulfilled key roles in minesweeping, blockade enforcement, and convoy defense throughout World War I. Condition – GVF, AGS slightly worse with more contact marks and more wear to naming.
