Pitt Island Nīkau Rhopalostylis sapida
Pitt Island Nikau palms are one of the world’s most southern palms, also known as Chatham Island Nikau. New Zealand's only native palm, our specialty. Dark green foliage, fast-growing after 1st year, fertilise twice a year for best results. Very hardy tolerates full sun and has a tidy appearance compared to other strains of Nikau in New Zealand. Can be distinguished from other varieties by its shuttlecock shape. The nikau trunk is ringed by closely spaced leaf scars and when young is green between these. The feather-like leaf is up to 3m long and 2m wide. We recommend not planting them to close together as they get big! Ask to see established examples in our garden.
