This beautiful enamel of Our Blessed Mother The Virgin Mary is by Pierre Bonnet one of the most famous of the Master Enamellers of France. It is a beautiful example of the quality of enamel paintings produced in the early part of the 20th century by the master enamellers of Limoges. It has been extraordinarily difficult to photograph as the glaze is deep and brilliant and does not photograph well. However, in the photo you can see the curve of the copper onto which the enamel has been done. This method creates treasured artworks that will never fade as the enamel is impervious to light or heat, within reason - throwing it into a fire might cause some damage :) Each colour in these Limoges enamels has to be applied separately then fired then on to the next colour. Enamels can take between 16 and 22 firings, a long and laborious process that has to be right first time each time. No wonder they are so sought after. It is set into an oak surround which is itself set into a goosen frame which has a gilded edge. Goosen is a plaster frame that has been polished and then painted to be almost an exact copy of straight grained ebony. The enamel is perfect, the oak surround is perfect and the frame is almost perfect. The enamel measures 10 cm by 7.5 cm and the frame is 20 cm by 18 cm and is 2.5 cm deep. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an integral part of the sale description.
