WhyLand Limited Edition by Drew Brophy

"WHYLAND" Marked as a pivotal point in Drew Brophy's painting career, as it was the first canvas painting he ever did using the Posca Paint Pens. THE FIRST 25 Canvas and paper prints sold will be hand-signed and numbered by Drew Brophy himself. After that, all prints will be open edition, unsigned. ABOUT THE ART: Drew remembers, "This was the first painting I did on canvas with the Posca pens. Until year (2018) this is one of the only original paintings I hung onto, not wanting anyone to buy it, as I felt it was a piece of history. The painting itself was inspired by the days when I lived on the North Shore of Oahu in the early 1990's. I spent a lot of time waiting for the bus after painting all day at Proglass, where I airbrushed surfboards for Bill Barnfield. The bus stop was right in front of the world famous Wyland Galleries, so I would wander in to check out the art as I waited for my ride home. Marine-life artist Wyland is well known for his painted, over-and-under ocean scenes. I would walk into his gallery, totally out of place, covered in paint and mud. Wyland would come out and shake my dusty hand - he was always very nice to me at a time when it was hard to make friends on the North Shore. A few years later I was living in San Clemente, and that's when my art started to really take off. This painting was like the catalyst to the takeoff of that career. As I was putting the last bit of color on this canvas, Maria, who was my girlfriend at the time, looked at it and said, 'Let’s call it Why-Land.' A couple years later, Wyland got wind of this parody I did of his work, and he bought a print of it." COPYRIGHTS All artwork is (c) Drew Brophy.
