Jan Anton Garemyn Flemish School 18th.Century Drawing Study Of Crying Children Circa.1785
Jan Anton Garemyn 1712-1799. Flemish School 18th.Century. Black and white chalk drawing on laid blue paper. Study of Crying Children. Inscribed and dated 16 Février 178[5]'; and later numbered '73' upper centre. Some soft creasing to sheet to no real detriment. 32.5 by 23 cms. Garemyn was a prolific Bruges born draughtsman and painter primarily known for his lighthearted depictions of everyday life and genre subjects. He served as a teacher and the headmaster of the Bruges Academy. This specific study of a crying child illustrates Garemyn's practice of capturing intense human expressions and "tronies"—character studies that focused on exaggerated or specific facial expressions rather than formal portraiture.
