Parvai Original Syahi–Begar on Venkatagiri Fine Count Cotton Born from our deep fascination with the Syahi–Begar process, this sari is a study in balance between precision and softness, discipline and fluidity. Rooted in the printing traditions of Bagru and brought to life on an exceptionally refined base, it reflects Parvai’s continued exploration of craft across regions. The foundation of this sari is a Venkatagiri fine count cotton, woven by traditional weavers in Venkatagiri. Known for their extraordinary skill in handling delicate yarns, these weavers produce fabrics that are light, airy, and quietly luxurious. The weave carries a natural softness and fluidity, allowing the sari to drape with ease while maintaining strength and structure. The zari checks are intentionally perfected, carefully calculated to accommodate the rhythm of the three-inch traditional wooden blocks. Their proportion is aligned with precision, ensuring that the interaction between weave and print remains harmonious. These blocks, some nearly 70–80 years old, carry within them a continuity of practice, and the fabric is prepared to receive them with equal discipline. On this refined ground begins the language of print. Executed by traditional artisans, the sari follows a three-step block printing process, an outline block followed by two tonal filling blocks. Each floral motif, often no larger than a few inches, is constructed with remarkable precision. Achieving such clarity on hand-carved wooden blocks, especially at this scale, is rare. The absence of colour seepage across the body reflects both the mastery of the printer and the integrity of the process. The design vocabulary is intentionally restrained and deeply rooted. A field of miniature florals unfolds across the sari, inspired by nature and anchored in the long-standing traditions of Bagru. Among them, the Deepak (a lit earthen lamp) and Tuhri Patashi (tulsi Flower) motifs stand out, among the oldest and most defining elements of this vocabulary, carrying a sense of continuity that feels almost timeless. The Syahi–Begar process brings these motifs to life through natural dyes, iron-based blacks (Syahi) and alum–madder reds (Begar). Each stage, from preparation to final washing, is carried out with care and patience, allowing the colours to settle into the fabric rather than sit on its surface. The result is a palette that feels earthy, soft, and enduring. What emerges is a surface that is both precise and gentle. The interaction of fine-count cotton with wooden block printing creates a print quality that feels almost archival, reminiscent of textiles preserved in museum collections. Despite the labour-intensive nature of this process, the sari maintains a remarkable uniformity, achieved through consistent pressure and experienced hands. This is an all-day, everyday sari, light on the body, breathable, and easy to drape. Its luxury lies not in weight, but in refinement. Over time, it will continue to soften, adapting naturally to its wearer. Each sari represents over 250 person-hours of labour and is created as a single, unique piece. Every stage of its making respects the dignity of labour, ensuring artisans are fairly compensated and work within thoughtful, humane systems. The processes remain environmentally conscious, relying on natural dyes and sustainable methods. Dimensions Length: 5.5 meters Width: 1.27 meters Weight: 559 grams Care Gently hand-wash in cold water with mild detergent Dry in shade Avoid direct sunlight Slight irregularities in weave or print are not defects, but signatures of the handmade process, reminders of the human hand. At its core, this sari is not just about technique, but continuity of knowledge, of material, and of intent.
