The Archery Ground, 1850,

a general view of Archery Gardens, located in deep valley just to the west of the adjacent valley containing St Leonards Gardens. The space was donated by James Burton to his friends, the Mackay sisters, so they could establish The Society of St Leonards Archers in 1833. The society acquired royal patronage the following year when they befriended the visiting Princess Victoria, leading to it being renamed The Queen’s St Leonards Archers after she ascended to the throne in 1837. Archery was a very sport in the 19th century, and was unusual in being perhaps the only sport where women could compete alongside men.
