This item celebrates our history, our persistence, and our victory. “1885 – First State Recognized” North Carolina officially recognizes the Indians of Robeson County as “Croatan Indians,” the very first time any government admitted we were Indians/indigenous. Championed by State Representative Hamilton McMillan, the act also laid the groundwork for the Croatan Normal School (founded in 1887), today known as the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. 1885 is what made 1888 possible. “1888 – We Asked Congress” The tribe asks the U.S. Congress for help and recognition for the first time. This started the long fight with the federal government. “1956 – Named but Denied” The Lumbee Act is passed. The federal government recognized we were Indians/indigenous but unfairly said we could not have any benefits or support. “1989 – Only Congress Can Fix It” The government said the only way to fix the unfair 1956 law was for Congress to pass a new one. “2007 – House Passed H.R. 65” The House passes H.R. 65, but denied in the Senate. This victory started the new wave of support. “2024 – Closest Yet” The House passed the Lumbee Fairness Act for the third time in a row. This showed that support for the tribe was stronger than ever. “Jan. 2025 – First Presidential Directive” For the first time in history, a sitting President (Trump) issued a formal directive instructing his administration to support full federal recognition for the Lumbee Tribe. “Dec. 2025 – VICTORY” The President signs the Lumbee Fairness Act into law. After 140 years of fighting, first for state recognition, then for federal recognition, our people, the Lumbee, finally win FULL federal recognition. Dec. 18th, 2025. "The purpose for designing this was to capture this monumental event in a timeless collectible that can be passed down from generation to generation, so our story is never forgotten."
