Sumatra Gayo Gold
INFORMATION TASTING NOTES VARIETIES Coffee was brought to Sumatra by the Dutch East India Company in the early 1700s. Originally that was a coffee variety from Ethiopia, and along with the island of Java, Sumatra quickly became the largest producer of coffee exported to Europe. Most of that coffee was grown in the Barisan Mountains in the Aceh region, where the Gayo people have made their home for thousands of years. In the 1870s and 80s, Sumatra experienced a fungal plague of coffee leaf rust, which devastated their crops. Because of this, the varieties replanted have been largely a cross of Bourbon and the Timor Hybrid (TimTim), which is resistant to many diseases due to its robusta parent. These are big, bold coffees, not to be confused with the delicate cups out of Ethiopia. (Photo courtesy of Brian Phillips at Anthem.) RYE BREAD COCOA SAGE BorBor TimTim
