Ruffino traces back to 1877 in Pontassieve outside Florence, founded by cousins Ilario and Leopoldo and owned by the Folonari family from 1913 until its 2011 sale to Constellation Brands. Riserva Ducale Oro debuted in 1947 — sourced primarily from the Gretole estate in Castellina in Chianti, where galestro and alberese-rich soils on clay-limestone slopes give Sangiovese its hallmark acidity and savory grip. The Sangiovese-led blend with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon ages 36 months in oak, stainless steel, and concrete, exceeding DOCG minimums. Expect violet, black cherry, ripe plum, sweet tobacco, clove, eucalyptus, and dark chocolate framed by firm tannins and a balsamic finish.
