Ninebark (Bareroot)
Ninebark is a practical and beautiful shrub that supports exceptional insect diversity while providing essential soil stabilization in the landscape. We offer this species as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting, making it an effective option for establishing hedgerows or larger restoration projects. When planted correctly in a well-prepared site, it adapts readily to its permanent location. Botanically known as Physocarpus opulifolius, this plant is defined by its arching branches and unique peeling bark that reveals a red undertone. The foliage is attractive, with options that may include red or green hues. Small white flowers cover the branches and are favored by native pollinators, particularly solitary mining bees. We have observed this to be one of the best plants for attracting a diversity of insect species on the farm. This shrub is well-suited for controlling erosion along streams and creek beds, though it can also be used in general landscape settings. It is hardy in zones 3-7 and reaches a mature height of 10 feet with a spread of 7 feet. While it thrives in well-drained soil near water sources, it is capable of growing in conditions ranging from wet to dry soils. Planting during dormancy allows the root system to settle before top growth begins. This timing supports the plant's ability to establish in varied soil conditions. Ideally, the site should be well-prepared to ensure good soil contact for the roots.
