2020 Jean Stodden Spätburgunder – Rescued by H.O.
Produced by Weingut Jean Stodden in Ahr Valley, this cuvée was created in response to the devastating 2021 Ahr Valley floods, with “H.O.” referencing the emergency relief efforts that helped support the region. Made from Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) grown on the Ahr’s steep, slate-rich vineyards, the wine reflects both the estate’s traditional focus on site expression and the resilience of the vintage. Vinification follows a classic approach with careful extraction and maturation in French oak, allowing structure and finesse to develop. Tasting note: The wine shows a bright ruby hue, with an aromatic profile of red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry, layered with violet, subtle spice and a light earthy undertone. On the palate it is medium-bodied and finely structured, with silky tannins and fresh acidity supporting flavours of red berries, cranberry and gentle herbal notes. A slate-driven mineral thread adds precision, while well-integrated oak contributes hints of toast and spice. The finish is elegant and persistent, with lingering red fruit, savoury nuance and mineral lift. A poised and expressive Spätburgunder that combines delicacy with rustic structure, carrying both a strong sense of place and the story of a remarkable vintage.
