I love this type of subject, with its craggy rocks, swirling water, and crashing waves. At first glance, it doesn’t look too involved, but it is a busy little scene with lots of opportunities to practice some exciting watercolour techniques. It requires careful use of masking fluid, particularly when combining it with a wet background. There’s some all-important texture on the main rock formation and the foreground rocks, plus sparing use of white body colour to emphasise movement in the swirling water and crashing waves. And don’t forget, one of the most important fundamentals right at the outset is to get the horizon line completely level. Happy Painting, Geoff.
