Peugeot-BP-Michelin, as the team was officially known from 1965 to 1976, was one of the defining squads of the late 1960s and 1970s. Its white jersey with the black chequerboard band became an icon of the peloton, carrying one of French cycling’s oldest names through a golden period of Grand Tour and Classic success. The team’s roll call was exceptional. Tom Simpson was world champion in 1965 while riding for Peugeot, and Eddy Merckx spent his early professional breakthrough years there, winning Milan–San Remo twice, Gent–Wevelgem, La Flèche Wallonne, a Giro d’Italia stage, and the 1967 World Championship road race in Peugeot colours. Peugeot-BP-Michelin also produced major Grand Tour success through French stars Roger Pingeon and Bernard Thévenet, plus Belgian time-trial specialist Ferdinand Bracke. Pingeon won the 1967 Tour de France and the 1969 Vuelta a España, Bracke won the 1971 Vuelta a España, and Thévenet delivered the team’s most famous 1970s triumph by winning the 1975 Tour de France, ending Eddy Merckx’s run of dominance.
