This remarkable colony of Scyphocrinites elegans originates from a historic Devonian exposure that has since been exhausted, making specimens of this quality increasingly difficult to obtain. Dating to approximately 370 million years ago, the fossil preserves multiple articulated individuals across an impressive two-metre span, creating a display of exceptional scale and scientific importance. Preserved in situ through rapid burial in a low-oxygen marine environment, the colony retains extraordinary anatomical detail throughout. Delicate feeding arms, intact calyx crowns, continuous stem columns, and anchoring root structures remain clearly visible, reflecting minimal post-mortem disturbance and an exceptional state of preservation. Careful museum-grade preparation has revealed these features while preserving the integrity of the original limestone matrix, distinguished by its subtle mauve-grey tones and natural calcite veining. The specimens represent a colonial aggregation from a critical interval near the Frasnian-Famennian boundary, a period associated with one of the most significant marine extinction events of the Devonian. Their completeness and articulation provide a rare insight into the structure of ancient crinoid communities and the ecology of Late Devonian seas. Combining exceptional preservation, considerable scale, and increasingly scarce provenance, this is an important and visually compelling example of Scyphocrinites elegans-equally suited to an advanced private collection, institutional acquisition, or curatorial display.
