Holton French Horn.

These are the intricate coils of a Holton H188 French horn. The tremendous complexity of the tubing is better examined from the outside, rather than through my usual internal approach. Brass instruments are always tricky to photograph, as you are photographing a reflection as much as the instrument itself. For this shot, I decided to reflect Mozart’s Horn Concerto in D major in the polished nickel plate, bringing a sense of what is happening inside the instrument to the surface. Holton began in 1896 with Frank Holton, a trombonist who performed with the famous Sousa Band. The marches of John Philip Sousa have since become a core part of American musical culture, and Holton remains one of the leading manufacturers of brass instruments for American big bands.
