Lollipop

I thought this piece would be straightforward, but it turned into one of the most challenging paintings I’ve taken on. I don’t map out shapes in pencil beforehand; I go straight to paint. So getting the lollipop perfectly round, and the stick completely straight, brought a level of focus and pressure I rarely feel when painting. I built the form gradually, working through a series of shapes and colours, layering carefully to keep the surface full and avoid it looking flat. The final nightmare to overcome was the stick, drawing a straight line with no aids at all. I cannot tell you how happy I was that it came out straight. It’s become of my favourite paintings for so many reasons.
