A Year in Normandie and Some Other Thoughts about Painting Catalogue

To accompany the exhibition A Year in Normandie and Some Other Thoughts about Painting at Serpentine North (12 March – 23 August 2026), Serpentine has co-published a catalogue with Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz Konig, Köln. It brings together new and insightful contributions from the fields of art history and literature to reflect on David Hockney’s monumental frieze A Year in Normandie (2020-21) and his latest series of paintings, created for his solo exhibition at Serpentine. Generously illustrated in colour throughout, it features essays by David Hockney; art historian and curator Marco Livingstone; and writer Olivia Laing; as well as an in-depth interview with Serpentine Artistic Director Hans Ulrich Obrist. Alongside installation views of the exhibition at Serpentine North, all paintings in the exhibition are featured in detail, emphasising the artist’s sensitivity to colour and composition.
