Junkyard Gems II

Look long enough at Junkyard Gems II and the grid starts to feel almost cheerful: two dozen Volkswagen Beetles, stacked four high in a scrapyard, painted in a candy box of yellows, pinks, blues and greens against a clear blue sky. Jesús Llopis paints each face with just enough detail to read as a specific car, a rust patch here, a cracked headlight there, while keeping the brushwork loose and fast. The blue sky and the bright palette turn a junkyard into something closer to a parking lot on a good day. The repetition does the real work: row after row of the same shape in a different color, until the whole thing reads like a color chart built out of scrap metal.
