JARRE by Maxime Testu

Monumental in scale and unusually restrained in palette, this earthy brown contemporary still-life painting gives a single vessel the presence of an entire scene. Tobacco, umber, and muted olive gather inside the broad silhouette, where softened layers keep the surface from settling into one fixed tone. The enlarged jar lends a dining room, living area, or study a sense of weight and intimacy, drawing attention through shape rather than decorative detail. Faint marks beneath the dominant outline suggest earlier stages of the image and give the brown surface a lived-in depth. By concentrating so fully on one familiar object, the work makes its volume, contours, and colors feel unusually consequential. A Design by Maxime Testu.
