Late 18th Century South German Walnut Marquetry Writing Desk, c. 1780

This remarkable South German writing desk dates to circa 1780 and reflects the elegant transition from late Baroque and Rococo forms toward the cleaner lines of Neoclassicism. Its broad kneehole design, softly curved case, and beautifully figured surfaces give it a refined presence from every angle. Both decorative and highly functional, it would make an impressive writing desk, library centerpiece, or distinctive console in a modern interior. The desk is richly veneered in walnut with contrasting marquetry borders and carefully arranged panels that showcase the wood’s varied grain and color. Five drawers provide generous storage, each decorated with shaped inlaid reserves and fitted with ornate metal escutcheons. The top incorporates an inset gilt-tooled leather writing surface, while leather-lined slides pull out from both ends to create additional workspace. Slender curved legs and decorative metal sabots complete the graceful form, and the hand-cut dovetailed drawers speak to its traditional construction. The desk is in nice antique condition with wear consistent with nearly 250 years of use, including scratches, stains, fading and losses to the leather, veneer cracks and lifting, small chips, separations, finish variation, and evidence of old repairs and restoration. The metal hardware and mounts show age and patina, and the drawer interiors retain expected marks from use.
