The emerald cut is the quiet one of the diamond family: long, open facets that flash in slow, wide sheets of light rather than a scatter of sparkle. Against the marquises above it, the contrast is the whole design. They sit close to the ear and move only a little, which is exactly what you want when the dress is doing the talking.
