Saint Peter of Alcántara | Linen Texture Print

Saint Peter of Alcántara (Unframed Print) By A. Masson (circa 1839) Bring this engraving into your home. It shows St. Peter of Alcántara (1499–1562), the Spanish Franciscan whose poverty and penance became a school of prayer for the whole Church. Born of noble family, he entered the Friars Minor, stripped his life to the bare Rule, and led a reform so austere that his friars were called Alcantarines. St. Teresa of Ávila sought his counsel and later said that without him she would not have dared to begin the Carmelite reform. Masson’s engraving of Zurbarán’s painting finds him at his writing with the Holy Spirit descending as a dove—the same hidden labor by which he taught souls to pray.
