THE WATCH The green on this Lord Matic does something rather lovely: it begins gently at the centre of the dial, then gathers depth towards the edge. Against that darker border, the fine baton markers look particularly crisp. It is a restrained watch at first glance, but give it another look and the dial reveals a surprising amount of character. By the early 1970s, Seiko was finding new ways to put sophisticated automatic watchmaking into a watch for everyday life. This 5606-7070 brings that idea together with sharp, purposeful casework and a many-linked bracelet: smart enough to dress up, individual enough to enjoy for its own sake. A BIT OF TRIVIA In 1972, the year this Lord Matic was made, Seiko's Japanese watch catalogue wasn't a conventional book. It came as a four-ring binder, with extra pages added as the range changed. The experiment lasted only around eighteen months before Seiko returned to bound catalogues. It's a wonderful little glimpse of an era when Seiko was introducing so many different designs that even its catalogue had to be made for change. OUR THOUGHTS We like the way this one allows the green to be the star without letting it take over the whole watch. Those slim markers, the strong lugs and the fine links of the bracelet all hold their own. The result has a personality that becomes clearer the longer you look at it, and that is just the kind of Lord Matic we enjoy putting back into the world.
