A rare and highly functional 17th-century Italian priming flask, ingeniously incorporating both a wheel-lock spanner and a screwdriver. Such combination tools formed an essential part of the equipment of a mounted or foot marksman using wheel-lock firearms, allowing the weapon to be primed, adjusted and the lock mechanism spanned with a single compact accessory. The body is finely engraved with alternating bands of scrolling foliage, giving this utilitarian object a particularly refined decorative character. A movable suspension ring allows the flask to hang freely from the wearer’s equipment while remaining readily accessible for use. The priming mechanism is operated by a spring-loaded iron pusher, releasing a controlled quantity of fine priming powder directly into the pan of a pistol or long gun. The integrated spanner was used to tension the wheel of the wheel-lock mechanism, while the screwdriver provided a practical means of adjusting or maintaining the lock. Combining several indispensable functions within a single object, this flask represents an early and sophisticated form of military multi-tool. It illustrates both the mechanical complexity of the wheel-lock firearm and the specialised equipment required by the 17th-century marksman. Italy, 17th century.
