Interlocking circles and grid-like passages move across the sheet in blue, plum and burnt terracotta, with faint pencil annotations in the artist's hand along the upper margin. The deckled edge of the sheet is visible within the frame, a reminder that this is a one-of-a-kind work on paper, not a printed edition. RETNA (Marquis Lewis) is a self-taught artist from Los Angeles whose constructed script fuses Egyptian hieroglyphs, Arabic and Hebrew calligraphy, Gothic blackletter and graffiti. He has exhibited at MOCA Los Angeles and designed sets for Aida at the Washington National Opera and San Francisco Opera.
