My Beautiful Laundrette — Vintage Movie Tee Released in 1985, My Beautiful Laundrette is one of those films that feels completely of its time and somehow still remarkably modern. Directed by Stephen Frears from a screenplay by Hanif Kureishi, the film follows Omar, a young British Pakistani man in Thatcher-era London who takes over his uncle’s rundown laundrette and transforms it into something bright, stylish, and completely his own. Along the way, he reconnects with Johnny, an old friend and former street punk played by a very young Daniel Day-Lewis. And they fall in love. What makes the film so good is that their relationship is simply woven into a much bigger, messier story about race, class, immigration, family, money, ambition, and 1980s Britain. Omar and Johnny are allowed to be funny, sexual, complicated, occasionally selfish, and genuinely affectionate at a time when gay characters on screen were rarely given that much humanity. Daniel Day-Lewis is also ridiculously charismatic as Johnny—bleached hair, denim, boots, and all—and his relationship with Omar gave queer audiences something especially unusual in 1985: an interracial gay romance that wasn’t treated as a cautionary tale. The laundrette itself becomes almost another character: neon, bubbles, glass, music, and the wonderfully optimistic name Powders glowing against a much harsher world outside.
