Neoclassical Plaster Figures After Clodion - Bacchante & Hebe Nymphs

An elegant and substantial pair of late 19th or early 20th-century French Neoclassical style patinated plaster figures after the celebrated 18th-century sculptor Claude Michel, known as Clodion. Standing an impressive 20 inches tall on circular stepped bases, these figures are designed as an opposing, mirror-image pendant pair. They feature a beautiful, deep sepia and ivory faux-terracotta patinated finish that gives them an authentic Grand Tour aesthetic. Both figures feature the incised "Clodion" signature on the reverse of the base. The Subjects: Figure 1 (Intact): A dynamic Bacchante or nymph holding a cluster of grapes aloft and a shallow wine cup, celebrating the harvest. Figure 2 (Damaged): Hebe, the cupbearer of youth, holding an ewer/jug and accompanied by the Eagle of Zeus at her feet. Condition Report & Restoration Project Opportunity: Left Figure (Bacchante): Excellent antique condition with minor surface wear, light scuffs, and age-related patina grime consistent with age. No structural breaks. Right Figure (Hebe): The raised arm has suffered a structural break at the bicep. Crucially, the original internal metal rod armature remains intact, perfectly preserving the correct structural alignment, angle, and height of the upper arm and ewer. A selection of the original broken plaster fragments is included with the sale (see photo 4). This is a highly rewarding restoration project. Because the internal metal skeleton has kept the hand and jug in their exact original spatial positions, rebuilding the missing plaster volume around the arm is straightforward for a restorer or skilled DIYer. Once repaired, this matched pair will regain its full decorative impact and value. Please review all photos carefully to evaluate the condition and the break against the armature, and if you need any additional images before buying please contact us. Each figure measures: 20" (51cm) tall x 5.5" (14cm) diameter DELIVERY OF THIS ITEM: Insured courier delivery of this item will be £30.
