iPad Air & Pro Sleeve ANGUS Vegan with Pencil Holder

The ANGUS has been around for years. The shape is settled, the seams sit where they should, the fit is exact to the millimetre. What is new about this sleeve are the two materials – and they come from places where nobody would look for an iPad sleeve: an oil mill, and a vat where sugar is fermented. It smells of olive and looks like nothing much. From this pomace comes Oleatex, the material for the outside of this sleeve. It carries a saffiano texture. The fine grain recalls well-known Italian leather goods and gives the surface a quiet, tactile depth. The colour is a muted royal blue – dark enough to sit calmly, light enough to let the texture show. Sugar that turns into fibre Inside sits Violan, a vegan felt made in Germany, 3 mm thick. It is made from two fibres, and the first one is the more surprising. It begins as plant sugar. The sugar is fermented, roughly the way dough is left to rise – and lactic acid forms. From that lactic acid a thread can be spun which is worked like any textile fibre. The second fibre comes from cellulose, the substance plants are made of. Both come from plant and wood residues. The result feels like felt: dense, soft, with a matt surface that swallows light instead of reflecting it. It cushions the device and forms the layer between it and the zip. To be straight about it: Violan is a technical textile, not a natural felt from a sheep. The difference is in the raw material. How it becomes a sleeve Both materials arrive at the same workshop in Hamburg where we have been working since 2011. The construction follows the established ANGUS shape: 27.3 × 19.9 centimetres inside, seam to seam. It closes with a YKK zip in matt silver, running all the way around. It is set in so that it glides above the device when you open and close it – the 3 mm Violan felt lies in between. Before packing we check seams, edges, zip and fit by hand.
