Joshegan Rug - 4'6 x 6'6

A richly patterned vintage Joshaghan rug with a dense field of highly stylized floral and geometric motifs surrounding a dark indigo diamond medallion. The saturated madder-red ground is enlivened by an unusually broad palette of indigo, sky blue, turquoise, green, ivory, apricot, gold and soft coral. The especially striking border is set against deep navy and composed of large, alternating geometric floral forms linked by angular vines, giving the rug a strong architectural frame. Multiple narrow guard borders add further detail and contrast. Joshaghan weaving is admired for its distinctive combination of village geometry and classical floral design, and this example is particularly lively, with an unusually varied assortment of small motifs filling nearly every inch of the field. Hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, with a substantial, durable pile and beautifully aged color.
