A South German or Austrian Painted Marriage Armoire, Dated 1848
South German or Austrian Painted Pine Marriage Armoire, Dated 1848 The double-arched moulded cornice centred by a scroll and painted cartouche, above two doors, each with three panels: the upper arched panels painted with gilt urns of flowers, the narrow central panels with floral sprays and the date ‘18’ / ‘48’, the lower panels with covered urns hung with floral garlands; divided by an ebonised central pilaster, the canted front corners painted with further flower-filled urns, the base with painted scroll panels, on bracket feet; the whole on a red-brown faux-grained ground, the doors with brass escutcheons. Catalogue note: Painted armoires of this kind, known as Hochzeitsschränke or marriage cupboards, were made throughout the Alpine regions of Bavaria, Austria and the Tyrol, commissioned to hold a bride’s linen and dowry and very often painted with the date of the marriage, as here. Built of local pine by village joiners and decorated by specialist painters, they turned humble timber into a celebration of colour: a faux-grained ground imitating costly walnut, panels of flowers and urns, and a bold architectural cornice. This example is especially well preserved in its scheme, the doors painted with gilt urns of flowers above garlanded covered urns, the date 1848 set in the central panels, and the double-arched cornice giving it a strong, almost Baroque presence. Such pieces were the most important item of furniture in a rural household, and survive today as vivid records of Alpine folk art.
