THE SAW-BLADED HUNTER ❃ The longnose sawshark (Pristiophorus cirratus) is one of the ocean’s strangest-looking sharks, instantly recognizable by its remarkably long, saw-like snout. Found primarily in the temperate waters surrounding southern Australia, this slender bottom-dweller spends much of its time over sandy and muddy seafloors. Its elongated rostrum is lined with sharp, tooth-like structures, giving the shark an unmistakable prehistoric appearance. ❃ That impressive “saw” is actually a highly specialized hunting tool. Sensitive electroreceptors along the snout help the sawshark detect the faint electrical signals produced by animals hidden beneath the sediment. Once prey is located, the shark can sweep its rostrum from side to side, disturbing or striking small fish, squid, and crustaceans before quickly capturing them with its mouth. ❃ Sawsharks are sometimes confused with sawfish, but the two belong to very different groups. Sawsharks are true sharks and possess a pair of long sensory barbels hanging from the underside of their rostrum, while sawfish are rays and lack these distinctive whisker-like structures. With its tooth-lined snout, sensitive barbels, and extraordinary senses, the longnose sawshark is one of the seafloor’s most uniquely equipped hunters.
