A peaberry is a naturally occurring mutation found in around 5–10% of coffee cherries. Instead of producing the usual two flat-sided beans, the cherry develops just a single small, round bean. Many coffee enthusiasts value peaberries for their concentrated flavour and even roasting characteristics, resulting in a vibrant, expressive cup. About the Coffee Handege Coffee Factory is a renowned washing station in Kiambu County and one of two factories managed by the Ritho Farmers’ Co-operative Society, established in 1972. Located in the far north of Kiambu County near the border with Murang’a County, the factory works with local smallholder farmers to produce outstanding washed coffees. The surrounding Gatundu Sub-County is historically significant as the home of Kenya’s first president, Jomo Kenyatta, and remains an important agricultural region where coffee and dairy farming continue to support local communities. Kiambu County lies just outside Nairobi and has one of Kenya’s longest coffee-growing traditions. Many of the area’s large estates were originally established during the early 20th century before being transferred to Kenyan ownership after independence. While urban expansion around Nairobi has reduced the number of large estates, the region continues to produce some of Kenya’s most celebrated coffees. The combination of iron-rich semi-volcanic soils, abundant sunshine, reliable rainfall and elevations reaching up to 2,000 metres above sea level creates ideal conditions for growing exceptional Arabica. Cool nights allow the coffee cherries to ripen slowly, producing the vibrant acidity, sweetness and complexity that Kenyan coffees are renowned for.
