The cam cover is cast from soft aluminium, so that little stud everyone loves to mess with? It strips if you even look at it the wrong way. And guess what—that same stud is what grounds your ignition coil. So even a slightly chewed-up thread can mess with the ground signal, leading to phantom knock or weak spark. Yeah, not ideal. Here’s the kicker: that bolt gets cycled constantly—plug changes, coil swaps, compression tests, leak-downs. Every time you turn it, you’re gambling. And VWAG? They decided to use oval-shaped bolts, because apparently they hate mechanics. Every install/removal cycle just makes the problem worse. The fix? Give the ignition coil its own dedicated ground straight to the chassis. Now you never have to touch that fragile top nut again. No nut, no wear, no weak ground—end of story. You still have to pull the stud to get the coils off, sure. But you don’t need to mess around with the double-nut grounding dance anymore.
