DETAILS Stone Setting : Thappa Jadau Kundan with Faux Polki Stones Finish : Gold-Plated Fastening : Push BackCRAFT STORY Mortantra's Jadau Kundan collection draws on one of India's oldest stone-setting crafts - a tradition carried by both the royal workshops of Rajasthan and the karigar ateliers of Gujarat - in which refined gold is worked around each stone to hold it without a single prong. We set silver-foiled stones into gold-plated brass and finish the metal by hand, bringing this royal-workshop craft within reach as accessible luxury.Jadau Kundan was perfected from the sixteenth century in the royal workshops of Jaipur and Bikaner and in the karigar quarters of Gujarat, where the same craft is long known as Pachi Kundan; artisans pressed purified gold around each stone in a bed of lac so it sat secure without claws or prongs, the reverse often turned into a second artwork in meenakari enamel. Mortantra's pieces carry that setting tradition forward in gold-plated metalwork, holding each stone the way the craft always has.THE PIECE A gold-plated Thappa Jadau chandbali earring pair set with faux uncut-diamond-look stones in the lac-set Thappa tradition. The crescent form is punctuated by floral and moon motifs, giving the piece a classical Rajput silhouette. The white colourway is derived from the pale stone selection, lending a clean, understated character to an otherwise architecturally bold form.
