The moko, also called mokko, is a bronze object found in the Sunda Islands that served as currency from the 17th to the early 20th century. A moko is shaped like a drum and is also called a moko drum. Mokos were used less as musical instruments than as status symbols and part of dowries. The four handles on the upper half are characteristic. The tympanum is often decorated in the center with a star or a sun, surrounded by concentric bands, which may or may not be decorated with chevrons and other geometric patterns, or with narrative scenes depicting human activities such as navigation, village life, musicians, or dancers. These decorations corresponded to the animistic beliefs of the peoples of the region. Mokos were mainly used on Alor, Solor and Pantar, to a lesser extent also on Java, Bali, Flores and Timor.
