INDIA-GB..1935 QUETTA EARTHQUAKE.. [23951]
1935(Jun 4) Envelope to Wallasey, Cheshire originating from the devastating huge Earthquake that leveled Quetta, Balochistan, India (now Pakistan) in the early hours of 31 May killing tens of thousands & destroying buildings, equipment plus disrupting postal services with stamps & equipment lost & emergency measures enacted. Envelope posted at a Post Office whose date stamp survived but stamps did not on 4 Jun with cds on reverse with face marked BY AIR MAIL. NO STAMPS AVAILABLE & in red ink FROM QUETTA which alerted the triangular I.S. & T 150c tax assessment to be waived & the item to pass…………There were literally hundreds of small P.O.’s in Balochistan & at this stage I cannot reliably put a name to this office that was clearly operational but without stamps.
