Term 4 2026 | Introduction to Clay Impression Moulds & Plaster Casting with Georgia Button (SAT)

Lecturer: Georgia Button Sat 10 Oct – Sat 17 Nov (3 full Saturdays) 9:30am – 4:30pm Level – Beginners Age – 16+ This is an adult class and is not suitable for students under 16 years of age. Students under 18, must obtain parental or guardian consent and submit a completed consent form before the class commences. This short course introduces students to the fundamentals of clay impression moulding and plaster casting. Working with objects brought from home, students will discover how clay captures surface detail and how plaster transforms those captures into lasting objects. Students will explore impression-making in a range of formats – from individual impressions to larger compositional slab work – developing an understanding of the mould-making process while being encouraged to respond intuitively to the materials and the forms. Through guided demonstrations, hands-on practice, and group discussion, participants will build both technical knowledge and a curiosity about found form. By the end of the course, students will have gained a set of practical skills to continue exploring independently, and created a collection of finished plaster pieces to take home. Essential WHS: Fully enclosed shoes are essential Students will be required to wear a dust mask (provided) Materials required: 15 – 20 objects smaller than 15cm to press into clay for impression-making (e.g. shells, seed pods, lego, keys, buttons, brooches, etc. Please no bones for hygiene purposes.) *IMPORTANT* Please ensure that objects are NOT precious or very sentimental, as some objects cannot have clay completely removed. 10kg of filtered terracotta clay (available in 15kg or 20kg bags) 2 x 9 litre plastic buckets Non-powdered disposable gloves (latex or alternative) Provided: Dental plater P2 Dust masks Various frames for containing moulds Plastic containers for mixing plaster Georgia Button’s multidisciplinary practice embraces moving-image, installation and sound to explore affect, personal histories and rural environments. Her current works examine how particular devices within digital video, sound and installation might speak to her lived experiences, particularly those concerned with notions of ‘loss.’ Button graduated with First Class Honours from Adelaide Central School of Art in 2022. Recent exhibitions and presentations include Petrichor, Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery, 2021; Hiraeth, Sauerbier House, 2021; Tactile, Self, Adelaide Film Festival, 2020; Hiraeth, FELTspace, Adelaide, 2020; and recess presents, Adelaide Contemporary Experimental, 2019. Button has undertaken a mentorship with internationally acclaimed collective SODA_JERK, in affiliation with Adelaide Film Festival and Adelaide Central School of Art. Additionally, she has been the recipient of Guildhouse’s CATAPULT grant, funding a mentorship with nationally renowned sculptural and installation artist, Nicholas Folland. She was one of five artists selected for a 12-month residency as part of Adelaide Contemporary Experimental’s 2023 Studio Program.
